My Favourite Pic in Ages: Tijeretas

The picture does these guys no justice at all – these wonderful sea birds hanging as if suspended by invisible strings, manipulated by a sky-dwelling puppet master.

Facing the same way and sliding effortlessly off one air current and onto the next; arrow-like, angular tijeretas (derived from “tijeras,” the Spanish for scissors) wait together in the sky, each oriented towards a common focus point making the flock look like a floating army, ready at any given moment to pull together and dive bomb to the sands below.

But this never happens.  Instead, the tijeretas seem simply to enjoy the sensation of floating. The group constantly changes levels, individuals circling in and out of the way of their neighbours…and the meditative swell created by this living cloud of birds continues to hang in space.
